C
【答案解析】[听力原文]21-25
W: What I can' t make out is why you' re so keen on the country house. Why on earth should we actually choose, to live out in a village, even if it is a popular village aa the house agent' s description says, when we could get a place right here in the centre of the city? You know that I' d much prefer to be in the town and...
M:... And be boxed in by a thousand other houses, I suppose, surrounded by a thousand faceless neighbors. No, let's go for the village. After all I'm the one who has to do all the traveling back and forth to work in the city every day.
W: That's all very well to take that romantic attitude. But what about my preferences? You are being selfish, you know.
M: Selfish? Me?
W: Yes, you! Think of the children. It seems to me that you' re so carried away with the idea of buying a house that at long last your personal likes and dislikes are making you anything hut practical. Triston, for example, will be going to secondary school next year. And as far as I' m concerned, the nearer the school is, the better. Have you read the description of your beautiful village house? "Local primary school within walking distance," it says. That of course means that the nearest secondary school will be in town.
M: There are such things as school buses you know. And even if there weren' t, Triston is perfectly capable of using public transport.
W: And think of Talia. She' s just getting used to the idea of being in the nursery. Can you imagine there being a nursery in the countryside? And I must say I like to be free of her for part of the day, so that I can get to de the shopping and the housework.
M: All right, all right. You' ve made your point. But after all these years in London I would have preferred a bit of fresh air and greenery and...
W: Stop talking through your hat. You' ve never been a lover of fresh air, your overcoat' s on at the first gentle touch of the first spring breeze. Why is it that you' re always insisting that you like the country life, you love getting up early, you adore a good brisk walk, and so on and so on, when in fact...
M: But I do like the country. I would love getting up early. I' d often be out there having a good brisk walk if only we lived somewhere that would make it all possible and worthwhile. OK, now, never mind, though. This city is good enough, I suppose.
W: Exactly. Now just look at this, the description of this house. I think we ought to go and see it. It's east of the town centre, so you won't be too boxed in as you say. And shops, schools and everything else are in easy reach. We' d have the best of both worlds.
M: And there's another consideration. It costs 2,300 pounds less. With that I could buy quite a nice sailing boat.
W: Oh no!
