Background
The company sponsored last month's finals of the above tournament, as it would be shown on TV. It was hoped that this exposure would increase public awareness of the company name in the area covered by the local TV channel (which broadcast the match), and strengthen the sporting image of our soft drinks.
Benefits
We commissioned a market research organization to carry out a street survey in the week following the broadcast, and this showed a rise of five percentage points in public recognition of our name, compared with a month ago. This is the biggest rise we have ever achieved.
In addition, sales jumped by nearly ten per cent immediately after the match, and although they have since dipped, they remain higher than at this time last year.
Disadvantages
The cost of sponsorship was greater than expected, and has taken up over half the total marketing budget for the current financial year. Unless the budget is increased, marketing will have to be reduced substantially.
The research found that many consumers now associate our products with sport, and although this was attractive to many of them, a small number claimed that it would put them off purchasing our Products. This is potentially harmful to sales.
