   Cloning may well turn out to be the most important scientific breakthrough in the closing years of the 20th century. Scientists have successfully attempted the feat of making an identical copy of an animal from one of its cells.
   Cloning has broken new ground on many fronts. It has injected new hopes into the efforts of finding cures to many incurable diseases. It has also brightened up the prospect for saving rare animals on the verge of extinction. Because of this, new developments in cloning have generated a high degree of anxiety among us.
   Science and technology always press forward whether we like it or not. It is understandable that many people now worry about the new development in cloning. In the early days of the nuclear arms race, people were horrified by the possibility of a nuclear tragedy. Forty years later, such fear no longer exists in any significant scale. Likewise, it is not unreasonable to expect that cloning will continue to develop in the same controlled fashion. Some European countries and the U.S. have already publicly stated that they will restrict human cloning efforts. We should remain optimistic both about future developments in this area and about their effects on the human race.
