Before we discuss the historical period known as the Renaissance next week, we're going to spend some time discussing the state of scientific and medical technology in the era just prior to the Renaissance. A striking example of a branch of medicine that changed dramatically during these times was dentistry. The early dentist drilled cavities with a drill that was operated by spinning a metal rod back and forth with the palms of the hand. Of course, this was before the discovery of pain relieving anesthetics (麻醉剂), so you can just imagine the skill it must have taken to successfully perform such operations in the mouth of a spuirming and possibly even screaming patient.
In the European Middle Ages it was not uncommon for a dentist to make house calls to wealthy patients. For most common people seeking dental treatment, however, the likely alternative to the house call was the use of the self-trained tooth extractors who lived among the street vendors (街贩). Obviously the hygienic (有益健康的) conditions encountered on the medieval streets would have been frightfully unsanitary (不卫生的). To make matters worse, the technique of these street level dental technicians was simply to rip the teeth from the mouth with brute force. Such an image gives us a much greater appreciation of the sophistication of modern dental techniques that were eventually developed as part of the many scientific discoveries made during the Renaissance. 14. What's the talk mainly about?
题目问的是;这篇讲话主要是关于什么的?文中第一段开头提到:We're going to spend some time discussing the state of scientific and medical technology in the era just prior to the Renaissance“我们将花点时间讨论文艺复兴之前的时期科学和医学的技术的状况”。由此可知[C]“文艺复兴之前的医学状况”是正确的。
