Why Should We Choose a Centre for Agricultural Purpose?
Recently, a plan to develop a new research centre in our country has been brought to the spotlight. There are mainly two proposals: one is to build a business centre, whereas the other aims to establish an agricultural research centre. People from different backgrounds hold different opinions on this issue. As far as I’m concerned, I think we should choose the latter without hesitation.
Admittedly, our country is an agricultural country whose farming production fails to meet even the domestic amount needed. We have no way out but to develop our agriculture, since agriculture is the foundation of our national economy. Furthermore, if we rely on imported food to feed the biggest population in the world, a disaster is around the corner.
To develop our agriculture, motivating peasants to work harder is not enough. What we should do is to raise their educational level and provide them with better seeds, more fertilizers, advanced machinery and equipment, and up- to-date technical advises. In short, advanced technology plays an important role in developing agriculture in our country.
However, some people claim that this cannot be a convincing reason, for science and technology are needed not only in agriculture but also in all other fields. My view is that the current situation in terms of agriculture confronted with numerous challenges, is the most serious one. Besides, China is a big country with widely different climates and soil conditions. In order to assist the peasants, we have to study all types of crops and all the farming conditions in this land. With a research center, these problems can be studied and solved systematically. But so far, no agriculture research center worthy of the name has been set up, whereas a business center in the southern part of China has already been established.
In view of all reasons above, to develop a research center well-funded for agriculture purpose proves to be crucial to promote agriculture in our country. If we take this step and succeed in this endeavor, our agricultural yield will be greatly increased, which in turn enables our economy to have a solid foundation as well.
