Professor: I will now run you through the timeframe of your project. As I mentioned a little earlier the first step is to write the story line. Each student is expected to write a script within four weeks from which I will then choose five to be produced. At the end of week five we will gather here again where I will announce the eight most viable scripts to be produced. Things you need to consider are budgets, practicality and the length of the film. Together with your lecturers and tutors,
we will select a range of scripts which may but not be exclusive to ethnic based films, documentaries, film clips, dramas, thrillers or comedies, to mention but a few.
Once the scripts have been finalised, it"s time to work out the production teams. It"s up to you to initiate contact with the chosen scriptwriters who will then decide what role each of you will play. Essentially you"ll need a cinematographer, producer, film and sound director, and editor all of whom may also require an assistant. Depending on the script, you may also want a casting director, costume designer, make-up artists and of course performers.
Scriptwriters will be given two weeks to finalise crew members after which production commences and the producer begins to call the shots.
You then have fifteen weeks for preproduction, production and postproduction which works out to around five weeks for each phase. Every two weeks you will meet with a designated tutor to advise them on your progress, ask for their expertise and just provide some general feedback on what difficulties you may have or encountered.
We also strongly advise that you have regular meetings with your crew so all members know what stage you are up to at any given moment, at least once a week.
This would be the responsibility of the producer.
The producer actually has the hardest job because as you know this is riot Hollywood and therefore you have no budget.
The only thing you do have is free access to University grounds, equipment and staff. However, this will be rationed, it won"t be unlimited access.
You can see the handout that I will provide you after the lecture for time restrictions on certain equipment and facilities. This will also provide you with guidelines as to what responsibilities each role has within production crews. However, this is not set in concrete and will be up to your interpretation.
If the handout doesn"t answer all your questions please wait until your next tutorial and direct any queries to your tutor.
I"m sure you will find that it is quite comprehensive and has details on everything from due date to marking criteria. So that wraps it up for now. Remember to put your thinking cap on now and get those creative juices flowing. Be original, be thorough, and work hard. Oh and by the way, please check out the university policy on censorship as noted in your handouts that are being passed around now.
