W: Hi, Brian. I have been looking for you for ages. Where have you been?
M: Well, I went to a lecture by Prof. Scott. He talked about the global warming, a topic that has interested not only the scientific fields but also the general public.
W: Yeah. I have heard a lot of discussion. But I am wondering the Earth is really getting warmer? You know we have had an extremely cold winter.
M: Yes, there’s no doubt about it. Scientists say that four years out of the last ten have been the hottest since records began.
W: But why does it matter if the Earth gets a little warmer?
M: It matters because it changes a lot of things concerning our life. If the Earth gets hotter, this will cause the level of the sea to rise.
W: You mean it will cause flooding?
M: Yeah, vast areas of the Indian coast, Bangladesh, Holland, and even London, would be under water. To say nothing of beautiful Venice.
W: That’s terrible! And will there be any other effects?
M: Yes, there will be many. The global weather system will change too, causing too much rain in some areas and too little in others.
W: Can we do something about it?
M: There’re a lot we can do. First of all, we must reduce the amount of pollution coming from industries and cars, and stop deforestation. Otherwise, we will suffer from our careless actions.
