Long ago, Deer had no antlers. His head was smooth. Deer was also a very swift runner, just as Rabbit was a great jumper. They were both very proud of their abilities and spent every day running and jumping to stay in shape. Deer never said much about his skill, but Rabbit frequently and loudly boasted about what he would do. The other animals argued about which one was faster.
To settle the argument, the animals arranged a race between the two. As a prize for the winner, the animals made a beautiful pair of antlers. Both Deer and Rabbit wanted to have them.
To make the race as hard as possible, the animals set it up through thick bushes. Deer and Rabbit were to start together on one side, push through the bushes, race to and around a large tree, and then come back again. The one who came out of the bushes first would win the antlers.
On the day of the race, all the animals gathered and placed the antlers on the ground to mark the start. Rabbit said, "I don''t know this part of the forest; I want to look at the "bushes where I am to run."
The animals thought that would be all right, so Rabbit was allowed to head into the bushes. Meanwhile, Deer waited patiently.
Rabbit was gone for so long that the animals suspected he might be up to one of tricks. They sent Mouse to look for him. Mouse found Rabbit biting down plants and pulling them away from under the bushes so he would have a clear path.
When Rabbit finally returned, they accused him of cheating. At first he denied it, but then admitted it when they all went into the bushes and found a path he had cleared. The animals immediately awarded the antlers to Deer, who has worn them proudly ever since.
