【正确答案】A: I'd like to choose the first topic—What do you think the most popular sport in China is?
The most obvious one would be ping-pong or table tennis. It is played often in China. People play during work, and many companies put a ping-pong table in a certain room for their employees to use. Students from primary school all the way to university play, sometimes up to 2 to 3 times a week. The game is simple. You play with two rackets and a small ball on a long table, and you just need to make sure the ball bounces once on your opponent's side of the table, except when you serve; then you hit it once on your side. Of course, you can't hit it off the table. To be good at it, you need to know how to change pace and direction. Anyone can hit it fast, but it takes clever flexibility to play well.
I think the reason that is so popular is because it's a sport designed to be played by anyone and it is something that Chinese grow up with and excel in. We do not have so many chances to get together and play outdoor sports, so we are more likely to get our exercise indoors. Chinese, I think, are quite individualistic in sports, even though they can be very cooperative at work. In general, if you look at all the great Chinese athletes, they tend to be in individual sports like ping-pong, skating, and walking. I'm not sure why.
Thank you. Now... (say the name of candidate B), would you like to ask... (say the name of candidate A) some questions? (Allow a maximum of 2 questions by candidate B, followed by one more question by the interlocutor.)
B: Do you play ping-pong yourself?
A: Not as often as I used to. I used to play it almost everyday. We used to have a table and we put it in our spare room, but now that I live in the city, It's impossible to have one in my apartment.
E: Will ping-pong always be popular in China?
A: I think so, but I think it may not be as popular in the future, because we will start to replace it with others. For example, I notice a lot of kids are now playing basketball, and when the next Olympics come, we'll probably go crazy over so many other sports.
Now... (say the name of Candidate B), would you begin by telling us which topic you have chosen and then give your presentation, please?
B: I'd like to choose the second topic—What's your favourite festival?
The Mid-Autumn Festival occurs on 15th August of the Chinese Lunar calendar. When the date comes around, family members always gather and have a big celebrations dinner. At night, they eat moon cakes and pears while they appreciate the bright full moon, Kids like to sit around old people and listen to the legend of "Chang'e flying to the moon": Once upon a time, there were ten suns in the sky, and so the earth became very dry, and crops could not grow. People had no night time to sleep. Among the people, there was a young couple—Houyi and Chang'e, Houyi was working in the field and hunting in the mountains diligently and Chang'e was busy sewing at home. However, their lives were still difficult. One day, Houyi met a Taoist when he finished work and went home. The Taoist was sympathetic with the situation of the young couple, so that he gave Houyi a bottle of elixir and told him if they took the elixir, they could fly to the moon which is a heaven for living, and they could get a special bow to shut down nine suns in the sky. Houyi took the bottle home and discussed the situation with Chang'e. Chang'e believed that Houyi was a Hercules and good at hunting. He had to wait for her to catch the bow back from the moon, then, he would be able to shoot down nine suns in the sky. People would have a good life later on. So she decided to take the elixir alone and fly to the moon. On 15th, August, Chang'e flew to the moon with a rabbit. She got the bow and threw it to the earth and Huoyi used it to shoot down nine suns. However, Chang'e could not go hack to the earth. She had to stay on the moon forever. Houyi was very sad. He made moon cakes and prayed in front of statues and wished he could help Chang'e come back. People were moved by this action of the young couple. They also made moon cakes and prayed that Chang'e would come back.
Thank you. Now... (say the name of candidate A), would you like to ask... (say the name of candidate B) some questions?
