【正确答案】[范文] Is Progress Always Good?
Modern societies tend to be very keen on "progress", especially in its economic and technological sense. Probably nothing is more palpable than the novelty, excitement and conveniences that the advancement of technology and economy brings. But I want to argue that progress, in a broad sense, is in fact a double-edged sword.
One byproduct of progress is environmental devastation. Because of the greenhouse effect, the earth's temperature is continually increasing, resulting in the melting of icebergs and the consequential rise in sea levels. Someday the sea could engulf big cities near the ocean.
Another major problem with progress is heavy pollution. Pollution has become so serious that the ecological balance has been damaged and many animals and plants either have already lost or will soon lose their natural habitats and become extinct. The air is unbreathable. And we are lacking drinking water. In these cases, progress is having the opposite effects to what it is intended.
Progress is also giving rise to a new lifestyle that obsesses over productivity, usually at the expense of a balanced life. There is a significant increase in stress. Also, increased productivity has a severely diminishing effect on people's innovation, and subsequently people tend to lack a sense of purpose in their lives.
From the above discussion, it can be concluded that progress is not always good. It can exert bad influences on our lives. Maybe those problems can be solved by more progress, but we truly need to pay more attention to them before they are properly solved.
