W: Good evening, sir. I''ve come to investigate the burglary that you phoned about. Now can you tell me what you know about it?
M: Well, for a start, this isn''t my house. I''m just staying here for 6 months while my parents are working in Japan. So, apart from a few obvious things, like the radio, the TV, the records and some paintings, I don''t really know what else is gone.
W: How exactly did you discover the burglary?
M: I went out at eight, as I do every Thursday, to go to my Italian class at the Institute in Roland Street. Afterwards I went to The Black Lion for a drink and I got back here just half past ten.
W: How can you be so sure of the time?
M: Because I stayed in the club until closing time, and it''s only a two-minute walk from here.
W: I see. And what did you find when you got back here?
M: All this mess you can see around you. I just walked in through the front door and found this. And it''s the same upstairs everything smashed, draws emptied and thrown about. It''s like an earthquake!
W: Do you know how the burglar got in?
M: Yes, the lock on the kitchen door has been forced.
W: Well, how soon could you let us know exactly what has been stolen?
M: I suppose I''ll have to write and tell my parents straightaway. They''re not due back until next month.
W: Well, if you don''t mind. I''ll just check for fingerprints and any other clues. And if I were you, I''d get down to that letter straightaway.
