Text 2
Fears of new technology have sometimes produced terrifying versions of the future. Aldous Huxley's nightmare of babies produced only in factories; the Frankenstein monster; the half human/half-animal clones of some future biotechnology.
The reality of biotechnology is somewhat different: babies born to otherwise infertile couple; hopes that genetic disorders may one day be corrected; viruses tailored to attack diseases rather than people; new grain seed developed to feed a hungry world. Whatever abuses must be guarded against, the benefits of biotechnology could bring life where otherwise there was only death. The gift of life.
Even the tragic death of young motor-cyclists can be partially transformed. Today his organs might have been used to bring life wasted, there is a glimmer of hope for those that grieve. Their boy's life has been lost. But his kidneys, and perhaps even his heart, might bring new hope to someone else. At the bleakest moment of their grief, families can glimpse the prospects of a new life. Modern medicine has made possible some remarkable gifts of love.
Among the most remarkable must be the heroic giving of live donors — siblings or parents giving one of their kidneys or some of their bone marrow ( 骨髓) a child. Donating bone marrow repeatedly and at great pain is heroic indeed. A costly gift of love. And kidney transplants from live donors also appear as remarkable gifts of love. Families prepare to risk danger, inflicting pain and even death, to give life to one of their members, such risk is not calculated coolly. If a brother or sister or child can be given new life, then it is a risk that many of us would unhesitatingly take.
