Unfolded before us is a picture simply drawn yet profoundly meaningful. An ancient prince"s mansion is being pulled down, while two stone lions are holding each other, crying bitterly. On the wall of the mansion hangs a sign which reads Historical Relic of the city. This picture obviously intends to convey to us this message, damage to historical relics has become a serious problem in China. This issue has aroused much concern in the society.
To my best knowledge, a variety of factors are responsible for this problem. To begin with, businessmen want to make huge profits with new commercial buildings. A modern shopping center, for instance, is more valuable than a mansion in their eyes. Moreover, some local governments have ignored the value of these historical relics, which were damaged or destroyed in the name of economic development. Last but not least, people have not realized the significance of the historical treasures, which carry not just the history but also the spirits and cultures of our ancestors.
To my best understanding, the following approaches can be figured out to address the problem. In the first place, the government is supposed to enforce the laws more strictly to stop destroying historical relics. In the second, the media need to enhance people"s awareness in historical relic protection. Only by adopting these measures, can we resolve the problem effectively and efficiently.
