Shanzhai versions imitate high-end, popular yet authoritative events in which grass-roots power usually has no participating role. Some of the most well-known events include the Shanzhai Spring Festival Gala, Shanzhai Lecture Room, Shanzhai Olympic Torch Relay, and Shanzhai Nobel Prize. When the word Shanzhai becomes so familiar to our life, there appear heated debates about whether Shanzhai should be encouraged or denounced. While the above mentioned Shanzhai events are arguably just for the participants to have fun and a certain freedom for creativity, others argue that the copycat culture associated with Shanzhai will stifle genuine creativity and hamper awareness of property rights. While the Shanzhai electronic products have gained popularity among youngsters for their cheapness and a certain degree of innovation, others criticize they are profit-oriented and do harm to their original versions.
