A new study shows that more than 26 million people in China suffer from depression, but only 10 percent of them are being treated.
The research was done by Liu Dan, clinical supervisor of the psychology center in Tsinghua University. She released her research result at a forum held by the magazine Parenting Science.
Liu said the incidence of depression is about 3 to 5 percent in China. And of the people who suffer from depression, 10 to 15 percent end up committing suicide. Unfortunately, the recognition rate of the disease is less than 20 percent nationwide, and only 10 percent of the diagnosed patients are willing to receive drug therapy.
According to Liu, side effects are the main reasons why most patients refuse to take medicine. She added that compared with suffering from the disease, side effects of those pills are minimal.
Liu further explained that the increasing amount of competition and pressure from work and life led to the jump in depression cases.
Most Chinese netizens could see that suffering from depression is a serious matter, but few actually mentioned treatment.
A sample of comments from Weibo. @My_Teddy_Life: I am too tired to work anymore. Even though the doctor diagnosed me with "depression", I don"t think it is that serious and I do not need any drugs. I just need a break. @An_Lu2012: I guess the actual number is actually higher. We live in a fast-paced society. Besides feeling upset, sometime I am frustrated and feel like be suffocated.

【答案解析】A clinical supervisor of the psychology center conducted a survey of the depression situation in China. The research shows that more than 26 million people in China suffer from depression.
According to the researcher, the increasing number of the disease can be due to the competitive society and pressures from both working and living. And the most serious problem is that most patients refuse to recognize it or seek any aid.
In my opinion, the actual number of this disease may be higher because Chinese are conservative and don"t want to admit that they are depressed. Depression is hard to diagnose by ourselves. I think the prime solution is to make public campaign and improve people"s awareness of depression.
