Is It Proper to Reconstruct Historic Buildings with Modem Facilities?

It is not unusual to see modern facilities in historic buildings especially in scenic spots. Modern facilities can help to create comfortable environments for visitors, but I would argue that it would have an adverse impact on the preservation of historical buildings.
Some people believe it is good for governments to reconstruct historic buildings with modern facilities, because those facilities can provide convenience for visitors. Unlike buildings nowadays, most historic buildings do not have air-conditioners, electricity, running water, and even well-functioned sewage. As the result, visitors may suffer from intolerable heat and the lack of water if they are visiting a huge historic building at the middle of summer. There would be no toilet even, if there were no modern facilities in those buildings. Consequently, fewer and fewer visitors would be willing to visit the place. On the contrary, appropriate facilities can attract tourists and help to create more tourist revenue. Besides, some modern facilities, such as the lightning rod, are necessary protection for those old constructions.
Opponents, however, argue that it is disrespectful of us to reconstruct historical buildings with modern facilities. On the one hand, modern facilities are discordant with surrounding buildings, and may ruin the cultural atmosphere used to be carried by them, disrupting visitors from feeling their historical richness. On the other hand, such reconstructions cause harms to original buildings, impairing their historical, as well as, architectural values.
In my view, reconstructions of historical buildings should be done at the basis of protective development.Preservation should always be the top priority, and I firmly believe that preserving the rich history and culture contained in those buildings is also preserving the tourism value of them; it is the unique culture that drives people to visit those places. However, most modern facilities threats historical buildings by alienating them from their historical heritage,degenerating them from priceless to valueless.
For the reasons mentioned above, I would suggest that we‟d better reconstruct historical buildings as they were before, to preserve their unique and most precious values, despite the fact that modern facilities can provide a cozier environment to visitors. Of course, I am not saying that we should not install lightning rods to protect those buildings, just, the less the better.
