The main reason that people are travelling more is that travelling is easier than it was in the past. Nowadays, we can travel using much faster forms of transport, so going to faraway places does not take too much time and effort. Most major cities are connected to the world by air travel and the basic requirements are some money and a passport. In the past, people would hear of distant lands and hope to visit them someday. Now, those hopes have become reality. Travel arrangements can be made with little difficulty online or through any of the numerous travel agencies found all over the world.
Travelling brings many benefits to the traveller. First, it allows them to see, and perhaps even experience, how people from other countries and cultures live. Many people will learn from this and perhaps take ideas back to their own locality. In China, many neighbourhoods have outdoor exercise facilities, encouraging people to keep fit at no cost. In Britain, where people are becoming less fit, these could be very useful. Travelling also allows travellers to make friends with a wider variety of people than they might otherwise meet. They can then use modern technology, like email and social networking sites, to keep in touch with each other and develop relationships.
In summary, I think people travel more for a variety of reasons, but mostly because it is easier. The benefits of travel are many, but I think the main ones are that people can see new places and meet new people.

I think that one reason people are travelling more is that it is, for most people, relatively much cheaper than it was. Nowadays, most people do jobs that pay them enough money so that they can afford to travel during their holidays. In China, for example, most people might find it hard to pay for a trip to the USA, but they can usually afford to visit some of the interesting places in their own country, such as Beijing, Guilin and Hangzhou. This would have been almost impossible for most Chinese people even thirty years ago. Another reason people travel more is because of commerce. As travelling has become easier and faster, people can more easily do business with others living far away. Although people can do business online or by phone, most people prefer meeting face-to-face sometimes.
Travel has many benefits for travellers. If they are doing business, they might be able to get better prices from people living further away. They might also be able to find items that are not produced where they live. More generally, when people travel, I think they usually realise that they are part of a bigger world, though this view may be optimistic. Travellers might also develop their language skills by going to places where a particular language they have studied is spoken.
To summarise, people travel for lots of different reasons and the benefits to travellers are also numerous.
