What are the five components of communicative competence discussed by Hedge? Write the implications of each of these components for language teaching.
(1)The five components of communicative competence discussed by Hedge include linguistic competence, pragmatic competence, discourse competence, strategic competence, and fluency.
(2) Teaching implications: ① Linguistic competence is concerned with knowledge of the language itself, its form and meaning, thus in language teaching, the basis language knowledge should be paid enough attention. ② Pragmatic competence refers to the appropriate use of the language in social context and this gives the implication for teaching that teachers should stress the contextual use and functions of the language in teaching by designing various communicative and authentic activities in classroom. ③ Discourse competence refers to one's ability to create coherent written text or conversation and the ability to understand them, which implicates that in language teaching it is important to encourage students to use the target language in a smooth way and to practice writing in target language. ④ Strategic competence refers to strategies one employs when there is communication breakdown due to lack of resources. Thus in teaching some communication strategies like topic-selecting, turn-taking, correcting and so on should be taught and learned through classroom activities. ⑤ Fluency means one's ability to ‘link units of speech together with facility and without strain or inappropriate slowness or undue hesitation’. That means in class teachers should encourage the students to use the target language to communicate to develop their fluency and be tolerant to their errors on one hand. On the other hand, they should take appropriate ways to correct so as to achieve accuracy.
