In view of the unstoppable globalization, the mastery of at least one foreign language seems to be of necessity. As children stand for the future of a nation, they need to equip themselves with various skills as well as language ability so as to be more competent in job hunting market in the future. However, recently, the debate over the question that whether we need to start learning a foreign language in a kindergarten or at a primary school has divided the public. People give different interpretations on this issue. From my perspective, the advantages of this practice outweigh its disadvantages.

As for the drawbacks of starting foreign language learning in a kindergarten, considering their age, pupils are more likely to encounter confusion and difficulties while learning both native language and foreign language. Consequently, various negative attitudes such as learning-weariness or fear of difficulties could be triggered on account of the confusion and difficulties mentioned above. What’s more, being exposed to two entirely different languages and cultures simultaneously, they are inclined to have a reduced cultural identity towards their native culture.

Nevertheless, the idea has also gained plenty advocates for the following reasons. To start with, children tend to have less scholar burden at nursery school period. Therefore, more time and energy could be dedicated to foreign language learning. Guided properly by their teachers or parents, they would find themselves sincerely interested in foreign language learning. And this interest usually leads to better performance in language learning. In addition, this period also proves to be the best time to shape students’ outlooks and to develop their language abilities. Considering the fact that language learning takes a long time, the earlier you start it, the more competent you will be to intercultural communications. And more often than not, one’s memory is failing with the passage of time. Starting learning a foreign language does not necessarily give rise to less good language abilities, but you just have lagged about three years behind your peers.

According to the above analyses, the demerits of learning a foreign language in a kindergarten are overshadowed by its merits. Since children are endowed with outstanding language ability in their early years, so they should make optimal use of their talents in nursery school period. Although, sometimes they may be confronted with confusions or difficulties in the process of learning, if guided well from teachers and parents, they can avoid adverse effects on themselves.
