【正确答案】A: I'd like to choose the second topic—should euthanasia be legalized? Euthanasia, a quiet and easy death, or "mercy killing" as we call it recently has made the headlines frequently. Many people applaud it and argue that euthanasia should be legalized. As it's pointed out, to practise euthanasia can benefit both the patient and his family. To a terminally ill person who is suffering excruciating pain day and night or living "like a vegetable", to be allowed to end his life painlessly is a good release. To his family it is also a big relief considering the financial and emotional drain on them that having to sustain his life entails. However, the legalization of euthanasia may also bring with it problems our society has not previously faced. Is it humane, for example, that a terminally ill patient is thus caused to feel guilty for remaining alive because he does not want to die? Is it wise that a patient is killed simply because of a mistaken diagnosis? And is it possible that euthanasia could always be used for terminal diagnosis? And is it possible that euthanasia could be taken advantage of for some ulterior or even criminal purposes? Since the legalization of euthanasia will raise serious moral and social issues, the decision our society makes about euthanasia will undoubtedly have tremendous consequences in society. Thank you. Now... (say the name of Candidate B), would you like to ask... (say the name of Candidate A) some questions? (Allow a maximum of 2 questions by Candidate B, followed by one more question by the interlocutor.) B: What's your attitude toward it? A: I think there are more advantages than disadvantages. As I have said, to a terminally ill person who is suffering pain day and night, to be allowed to end his life painlessly is a good release. But of course, we should respect the patient's choice, it shouldn't be implemented without the patient's approval. E: Do you think it will be leagal one day? A: I'm not sure. As it may raise serious moral and social issues, the decision should be carefully made. Now... (say the name of Candidate B), would you begin by telling us which topic you have chosen and then give your presentation, please? B: I'd like to choose the second topic—What do you think of development of private cars? As an updated product, the invention and production of automobiles has greatly pushed forward the civilized development of human society. With the development of modern society, automobiles seem to have become indispensable to people's daily life, especially in some developed countries such as the U.S. and Japan. For the time being, many Chinese people who have made their fortune are able to afford them. But in my point of view, the number of the automobiles should be strictly controlled by the concerned agency of the government. First, automobiles may take up much time and space. China is well-known as a dveloping country with a big population. Despite its large areas, it still seems narrow in space because of its population. If each person has his or her own car, you'll find that you're meeting with traffic jams in rush hours instead of going to work on schedule. You may believe that riding on your bike is faster than driving your car. When driving to the supermarket, where there is not enough space to park, you may complain how terrible it is that manufacturers have produced so many automobiles. Second, automobiles have brought about the problem of the pollution, which seems to be a symbol of modern civilization. Automobiles are giving out a great deal of smog every day, which has a deep influence on not only human health but also on the physical environment. If each person drives his car at the same time, you can imagine that how much smog these cars will create. Therefore, some actions should be immediately taken to decrease the number of the automobiles. Otherwise, there is a crowded and smoggy world waiting for us in the future. Thank you. Now... (say the name of Candidate A), would you like to ask... (say the name of Candidate B) some questions? (Allow a maximum of 2 questions by Candidate A, followed by one more question by the interlocutor.) A: Don't you think about there are also many advantages of owning a private car.9 B: Yes, It gives a much greater degree of comfort and mobility. The owner of a car is no longer forced to rely on public transport, and with a car, he can go where he likes when he wants. E: What do you think about the future development of private cars? B: What the increase in the general standard of living, I think some ordinary Chinese families will be able to afford a car. Though it causes many problems, the desire for the comfort and independence a private car can bring can't be eliminated.
