Write your article on ANSWER SHEET FOUR. Bohunt "We need to identify the good things in Chinese education and explore whether that can be transferred back to British schools," said Neil Strowger, Bohunt School's headteacher.
Jay Bremner, a math teacher of Bohunt, said, "It appears that information was largely just given to them very quickly, all in one go, with just the expectation that it's there, copy it and do it." he argued, "If we as teachers do not develop lessons tailored to the needs of our particular groups, it will fall on deaf ears—either the students will misbehave, the children won't access to it, or the children won't understand it."
Not long after the program started, students began to act unruly in the classroom. They chatted, made faces and put on makeup. One teenager drove the Chinese teachers mad by bringing a kettle and boiling tea in the middle of a class.
Chinese side Yang Jun (Teacher from north China's Shanxi Province) Discipline is very important; without discipline, you do not learn well. In China we don't need classroom management skills because everyone is disciplined by families and society, whereas here that is the most challenging part of teaching. In most Chinese schools, the classes are big in size, so discipline can keep students quiet and safe in class, and enable them to learn efficiently. Nonetheless, overemphasizing discipline can restrict children's free development, and over time, turn students into passive listeners. What's more, one has to go through hardship, confusion, even frustration in order to truly comprehend a subject. Otherwise, nothing can be achieved. I never give up simply because something is not fun. And this is the most valuable thing I learned from the highly strict, demanding and competitive Chinese education system.
Wang Bing (A columnist holding a doctoral degree in mental health from Peking University) This reflects a cultural gap. In a culture that emphasizes collectivism, it is important to stay the same as others; while in a culture valuing individualism, it is important to be oneself. The Chinese method of teaching is a product of both the structure of their education system, and, more importantly, the culture of their society... The system is geared to teach students to pass tests, not to question or to challenge. The Chinese system is excellent at what it does: rote learning. Participatory teaching gives students more lasting memory and two-way education has at least three advantages: First, it is less exhausting to students, for they can stop and discuss a problem at any time; second, it makes students and teachers more equal, and hence they are more willing to discuss a problem, and third, asking questions is a learning process for students.
Xiong Yongchang (Deputy Principal of Beijing 101 Middle School) The class taught by Chinese teachers achieved higher grades because their strict class management and systematic test-oriented teaching. The BBC documentary dramatizes clashes between Chinese teachers and British students, while not reflecting the differences in the two countries' education systems sufficiently. Regardless, the experiment should be viewed in positive light for it is an educational exchange program between China and the United Kingdom and China has been reforming its curriculum and gradually reducing class size and adjusting teaching strategy in the past decade.
【正确答案】Recently a BBC documentary recorded five outstanding Chinese teachers' experiences of teaching in Bohunt, a British school, which aroused a heated debate about Chinese and British education systems. Some people believe that British students can learn little from Chinese education systems, and it even restricts students' free development in many ways, so Chinese teachers should tailor their lessons for British students. Whereas others argue that British students can also learn a lot from Chinese education system. They can achieve higher grades because of Chinese education's strict disciplines in class management and systematic test-oriented teaching. Although Chinese and British education systems are different in some respects because of a collectivism-emphasized and individualism-emphasized culture, BBC documentary can still absorb the essence of teaching in both sides instead of dramatizing the differences.
Chinese education system certainly has some advantages which British students can benefit from for the following reasons. In the first place, British students can learn to observe some disciplines under the strict class management of Chinese education system (Yang Jun). For example, students are required to go to school on time. If British students can follow this, they can easily acquire the skills of time management and have a sense of time, which will benefit their whole life. Furthermore, British students can be more respectful and grateful for their teachers under a moderate Chinese education environment. Influenced by Confucius's learning ideas and many other traditional Chinese educational concepts (Wang Bing), we Chinese students are more respectful to our teachers. If British students can learn from these educational concepts, they can respect their teachers and others more. Thus it can reduce the quarrels and arguments in their daily life. Last but not least, British students can learn more knowledge and achieve higher goals under the Chinese education system. Although students may get bored to Chinese systematic test-oriented teaching (Xiong Yongchang), they master many kinds of useful knowledge in their learning and realize what they really interest in and develop them. Students can also learn to deal with some mental problems such as peer pressure, testing competition and class boredom during the process of learning, then they can be more strong-minded to face more problems after starting working.
