The past few decades have seen drastic changes in the world we are living. When it comes to the debate whether people now are happier than people in the past or not, there has been no consensus yet. Many people argue that people tend to be more pleased and satisfied with easy access to improved material life and spiritual life, while others insist that people now are less happy and contended than ever before. As far as I am concerned, I am in favor of the latter opinion.

First, students nowadays are placed under greater stress than ever. Those students, faced with pressure in furthering their study, stay up late to study, attend various courses held in school or educational institutions. Their stress derives from not only their own expectation but also parents, grandparents and relatives’ hope. So busy with schoolwork, they have really little time for complete relaxation. University students, faced with fierce competition in the job market, work hard to attain various certificates, take part in plenty of job fairs and attend countless job interviews. Some of them are confronted with the risk of failing to graduate because of failure in exams or thesis defense.

Second, the rapid social changes cause anxiety among the working-age adults. Adults have to work hard to perform well in their jobs. Otherwise, they may be fired by their boss on account of unsatisfactory performance. Moreover, the rapidly changing economic situation causes anxiety in employees. Because some companies may lay off workers to reduce expense and boost profits. What’s more, the property price and daily expenses keep rising rapidly. A long-term exposure to such pressure sometimes results in insomnia, depression and other health problems which are afflicting a good many employees. Working-age adults also have to take care of their elderly parents.

The retired are also the victims of the broadening generation gap. With various digital devices at hand, younger generations are keeping pace with ongoing changes in the world whereas the seniors still sit on their couch with limited access to information, such as newspapers. The elder often find it difficult to make sense of what the young are talking about. As a consequence, there will be less and less communication between the old generation and the young generation. Moreover, many elderly people are sent to geracomiums and their children just pay occasional visit to them. Therefore, the old generation feels more and more lonely.

All things considered, in such a fast-developing society, different age groups have different worries, pressures and trouble. However, in the past, things were much simpler. College graduates were assigned jobs upon graduation. The life expenses for working-age adults were lower. Living with their children, elderly people were taken good care of.
