Dear friends, welcome to the Louvre, the most famous museum in the
world. My name is Barbara and I'll be your guide to discover the treasures of
art during different periods of history. The Louvre was built
in 1204 and was originally the royal castle. Now, it becomes the Palace of Arts
and holds one of the richest museums in the world. Its collection, which ranges
from Egyptian art of 5000 B.C. to nineteenth-century work. is divided into seven
departments: Oriental Antiquities; Egyptian Antiquities; Greek, Etruscan and
Roman Antiquities; Objets d'Art; Sculptures; Paintings; and Prints and Drawings
until 1848. Inside the Louvre, you can view the exceptional
collection of European paintings ranging from 1400 to 1900 and the large scale
nineteenth-century French paintings. Try to interpret the enigmatic smile of
Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, or admire the perfect proportions of the Venus de
Milo. Each artwork is unique in its beauty, be it paintings or sculptures. Use
your imagination and artistic eyes to appreciate the valuable heritage of
mankind. With its seven sections, the Louvre Museum is colossal
in size, and owns an extraordinary number of works of art. Currently, there are
about 28,000 collections on display, which are only 5% or so of the Louvre's
treasures, most of which are being kept in storage in the cellars. Even for the
mere 5%, you will find that one day is by no means enough. There are several
tours possible depending on the time available. You can wander about in
leisurely fashion through the art of various countries and centuries or make a
closer examination of a specific artistic style that interests you in
particular. With my brief introduction and a detailed map in
hand, I believe you will have an unforgettable experience here in this
magnificent palace. Now you may explore by yourself and let US meet at the Glass
Pyramid entrance at 5 P.m. Good luck and enjoy yourself.
