Graffiti was first seen as an act of vandalism but then quickly became a form of artistic expression. Now it is such a hit all over the world. Why? And what makes the painters feel so good when painting on a wall? Let's first see the most profound effect of painting.
Graffiti focuses and relaxes us. It distracts us from our problems and focuses us on creating patterns in which there’s something comforting.
Drawing is a part of us hard-coded to our DNA. We' ve been painting on cave walls for over 40,000 years. When we identify a new pattern or work in an old one, our neurons spark the hormone dopamine, creating a satisfying sensation in us.
Non-verbal communication connects us to each other, too. We draw to communicate a message that connects us to emotions that we can't explore otherwise.
Drawing together on walls makes us feel socially accepted. Graffiti is a expression of our inner world and a way of positive interaction.
We draw to tell a story and mean we love it. Graffiti is the shortest story that can deliver quite a punch line.
文章简述了涂鸦从开始不被接受到成为受人青睐的新艺术的发展变化,并提出一个问题:为什么它会被接受而且造成很大影响?这样也就为继续展开话题做了 铺垫。英文简述这层意思可以概括为:
Graffiti was first seen as an act of vandalism but then quickly became a form of artistic expression. Now it is such a hit all over the world. Why? And what makes the painters feel so good when painting on a wall? Let's first see the most profound effect of painting.
随后文章重点讲述涂鸦作为艺术形式的重要作用:它能使人精神放松,让人放下 各种问题而把注意力集中到创作中,而创作使人感到舒服。对此可以简述为:
Graffiti focuses and relaxes us. It distracts us from our problems and focuses us on creating patterns in which there’s something comforting.
下面文章继续展开更本质的原因:画画是人的基因决定的活动,从原始的穴居时代人就开始在洞穴的墙壁上画画;画画时人的神经元会激发多巴胺激素,让人产生满足感。对这层意思可以简述如下:
Drawing is a part of us hard-coded to our DNA. We've been painting on cave walls for over 40,000 years.

Why are virtual graffiti walls such a hit all over the world? Graffiti, in its modem form, started with artists painting subway carts and then moved onto building walls. What was, at first, vandalism on public property quickly evolved into a form of artistic expression. Now adays we can see graffiti in galleries, art museums, art shows and all over our streets.
But what's so appealing about painting something on a wall? And why does sharing something we painted with others make us feel so good? Well, let's start with the most profound effect we experience when we're painting:
First, graffiti, like most art forms, focuses and relaxes us. Art, as a form of expression, allows us to explore our emotions and manifest them into something others can interact with. This form of expression has an amazing stress-relief effect on us. Drawing distracts us from our problems and focuses us on creating patterns. There’s something com forting in creating patterns and unraveling them.
Second, drawing is a part of us. It's hard-coded to our DNA. We've been painting on cave walls for over 40,000 years. We did so to tell stories, celebrate events and pass on knowledge. When we identify a new pattern or new work in a pattern we already know , our neurons spark the horm one dopamine, creating a satisfying sensation in us. The reward we get from it gratifies us emotionally, giving us a sense of accom plishment.
Third, non-verbal comm unication connects us to each other at a new level. We are complex beings with many layers. Most of those behavioral and emotional layers are hidden deep within our subconscious mind. Those hidden layers are the real reason why we do the things we do. When we draw something, we communicate a message that connects us to emotions that we have no opportunity to explore otherwise.
Fourth, drawing together on virtual graffiti walls makes us feel socially accepted. Graffiti is a public expression of our inner world and when we expose ourselves to other people and interact in a positive manner with them we feel that we are accepted. We thrive on human interaction. When we work on creating something together, the experience fuels us. We share and compete with each other, especially when we're doing something new and exciting.
Fifth, when we draw, we tell a story and love telling stories. The one thing that sets graffiti apart from other forms of art is graffiti's ability to convey a message and tell a story. Graffiti is the shortest story you ’ll encounter. Short as it is, it can deliver quite a punch line. The more time passes and our technology advances, the greater our need for exposure and acceptance. And graffiti can do just this for us.
