If there is a paradise for environmentalists, Iceland must be it. It is the world's most energy efficient country, with 70% of its needs covered by domestically produced renewables. The volcanic island and {{U}} {{U}} 1 {{/U}} {{/U}}300000 inhabitants are blessed with natural hot springs. All {{U}} {{U}} 2 {{/U}} {{/U}}the island's electricity is produced cleanly—84% through hydropower, while the rest comes from geothermal energy, using the heat from the earth.
Fossil fuels are used only for transport, but {{U}} {{U}} 3 {{/U}} {{/U}}here Iceland is determined to get rid of them completely. At that point Iceland started converting houses to geothermal heating, which is very cheap and costs less {{U}} {{U}} 8 {{/U}} {{/U}}fossil fuels.
There have been attempts to export Iceland's green riches abroad. Studies have been made on trying to send electricity through cables to Scotland, but {{U}} {{U}} 9 {{/U}} {{/U}}the moment it's not economical. If energy prices continue to go up and the price of the technology comes down, {{U}} {{U}} 10 {{/U}} {{/U}}something could be done about it. If exploited to the full, it is thought the energy could supply all of the electricity of a country the size of Scotland.
