Examinations can serve to push both good and bad students to work harder in that they encourage the former and pressurize the latter. In addition, examinations help tell teachers where in their teaching they have not worked hard enough. For example, when most students in a class cannot correctly use the future perfect tense, that will mean the teacher has not done enough drills in that particular aspect of grammar.
Despite what has been said in the above, there should not be any overuse of examinations in colleges. If teachers give examinations too frequently, they will really kill students' interest in learning.
