There"s been a warning that China faces a diabetes epidemic that almost one in ten adults now has the disease. Chinese researchers" writing in
The New England Journal of Medicine
found that most cases were undiagnosed.
The scale of the problem revealed by the study has shocked even the researchers themselves. They said rigorous new tests indicated that more than 92 million Chinese adults had diabetes, twice as many as previously thought. Nearly 150 million more were showing early symptoms. The researchers said rapid economic growth was partly to blame, through urbanisation, changed diets and more sedentary life styles. The figures are high because of the size of China"s population and they represent a major public health problem for the authorities in Beijing.
