【正确答案】

The American humorist and journalist Don Marquis said, “What man calls civilization always results in deserts. Man is never on the square-he uses up the fat and greenery of the earth. Each generation wastes a little more of the future with greed and lust for riches. ” Obviously, Don Marquis worries that the earth is continuously damaged by generations longing for wealth and the future of the earth is likely to be bleak. Nowadays, many people have the same worries as to environmental deterioration. In my view, environmental problems are inevitable but can be curbed with joined efforts of government, enterprises and individuals. Therefore, we are likely to make sufficient progress in conservation for the good of us and the later generations.

To start with, government must stick to its leading role in environmental conservation. It is of vital importance for government to take effective steps. Firstly, government should close the factories which have been continuously producing too much industrial waste water and gas. Some may disapprove of the closure of factories whose production has caused serious pollution to our environment because they are worried about the circumstances of factory workers. I don’ t think it is necessary because in the long term, the factory workers themselves will also eventually suffer from the harm brought about by environmental damage. Only with painstaking effort will the environmental problems be effectively curbed. Secondly, the authorities ought to supervise the production procedure of companies in the heave industry and make strict regulations which specify the requirements and punishments for companies violating the regulations.

Thirdly, it is urgent to limit the number of private cars in the urban cities and we should adopt the most cutting- edge technologies with a view to creating more energy substitutes instead of the petroleum.

Companies have the duty to meet the requirements of government on green production and make use of advanced equipment to deal with the industrial waste water and gas.

What’ s more, individuals have become more civilized than before. As economy prospers, people’ s living standard has improved and more and more individuals receive higher education. People are more cultured and aware of the consequences of continuous environmental damage. In the future, there will be more cultured individuals. As time goes by, with more and more people give priority to the protection of environment, the environmental problems can be curbed.

All in all, environmental conservation is a matter of action, not a slogan. Only with the joined, continuous efforts of government, companies and individuals can the future of the environment be guaranteed.
