It is quite an obvious fact that people‟s values and preferences change over time. In the past, traditional values, such as honour, kindness and trust, were regarded as the most important quality when it comes to a person‟s worth. Today,however, some people comment that most of us look for more materialistic “values”—social status and materials. But is it really so true and common?
As far as I am concerned, “old-fashioned” values are still the main stream of the criterion of a person‟s worth. If we say that traditional values, so-called “old-fashioned” values, are outdated and no long needed any more, then what else good nature can we man looking for in ourselves? Social status and material possessions may imply one‟s wealth, but wealth is never equal to worth. Those who have good traditional values in them are those who we are really willing to make true friends with and talk heart-to-heart.
Furthermore, people with traditional values are more reliable in works and business. When it comes to problem solving, only those who have traditional values can hold the matter and they are the people that the majority of the society want to be with. In reality, people believe in those who have the same views and values as themselves. In most occasions, material possessions are powerless and do not simply matter.
Nevertheless, we must admit that nowadays a group of people—especially teenagers who are misled by the mass media—are besotted with money and power. But we should still make it clear that, through most men seek wealth, all men seek happiness. And it is the traditional values that can bring us to true happiness.
To sum up, personally I would never say that, today traditional values like honour, kindness and trust are of no account. These values are never antiquated ideas but precious treasure of us, and as we are humans with thoughts and minds, we will always judge people by their personality rather than material status. That is because a person‟s social status may change, while personality often not.
