Rapid Economic Growth: Gain or Loss
There is a lot of controversy nowadays over the pace of economic growth. Some people say that the faster the economy grows, the better. There are others who claim that if economic growth is too rapid, it will bring about more problems than benefits. Is rapid economic growth good for China?
Those who want to speed up economic growth argue that, at the present rate of growth, there are still large numbers of poor people. Only a swift increase in the country"s wealth, they say, can improve people"s living standards and solve the social problems. Moreover, it is essential for China to keep up with the rate of global economic advance.
Those who criticize this point of view say that there are limits to economic growth, and that we are now approaching them. They point out that natural resources are limited, so we should be sparing in our exploitation of them. Even more worrying, they say, is the fact that the expansion of industry worsens environmental pollution.
There is certainly some truth on both sides. Neither unchecked economic growth nor economic stagnation holds the key to the problem. In my mind, we should strive for a level of economic growth which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
