单选题 The Boracay Island began to attract the attention of tourists when________.
【正确答案】 C
【答案解析】Boracay Island Boracay is an island of the Philippines. The island and its beaches have received awards numerous times. In the late 1800s the island was “discovered” by Sofia Gonzales Tirol. She and her husband Lamberto Hontiveros Tirol, a town judge on nearby Panay Island, took ownership of substantial properties and began to clear and develop the island. Decades ago, Boracay was an almost possessively guarded secret so that only a few knew of its existence. Tourism only began to develop in the 1970s, after the movie Too Late the Hero was filmed on locations in Boracay and Caticlan. In the 1980s, the island became popular with backpackers. Since then, Boracay has gradually become a cosmopolitan tourism destination. Boracay Island is a great place for just lazing around. Seven kilometers long, it is only one kilometer wide at its narrowest point. Boracay’s largest villages are Yapak, Balabag and Manoc-Manoc. A confusing network of paths and tracks connects them, and several smaller hamlets called sitios, so maps of Boracay can only serve as a general guide. Slightly more than half the 5200 population lives in Manoc-Manoc. Boracay's two primary tourism beaches, White Beach and Bulabog Beach, are located on opposite sides of the island's narrow central area. White Beach faces westward and Bulabog Beach faces eastward. The island has several other beaches. White Beach is the main tourism beach. It is about four kilometers long and is lined with resorts, hotels, lodging houses, restaurants, and other tourism-related businesses. In the central portion, for about two kilometers, there is a footpath known as the Beachfront Path separating the beach itself from the establishments located along it. North and south of the Beachfront Path, beachfront establishments do literally front along the beach itself. Several roads and paths connect the Beachfront Path with Boracay's Main Road, a vehicular road which runs the length of the island. At the extreme northern end of White Beach, a footpath runs around the headland there and connects White Beach with Diniwid Beach. Bulabog Beach, across the island from White Beach, is the second most popular tourism beach on the island and Boracay's main windsurfing and skateboarding area. Boracay is also well known for its now very rare gleaming white puka shells, said to be the best in the world. For years puka shells were dug out of the beach at Yapak and then sold. It's already a fait accompli that large masses of land are soon going to be moved in the north of the island. The most important Philippine property developers, Ayala Land, Fil-Estate and Primetown Property Group have bought up 205 hectares of land. There they intend to build resorts and housing for the better off; construction on the obligatory golf course is already well under way. There are so many restaurants that some have to tempt customers with surprisingly inexpensive, yet quite sumptuous buffets, ranging from P75 to P120. Others have concentrated on one particular kind of food to attract customers. The most important shopping items on Boracay Island are beach-related things, such as beach wear, beach towels, slippers, T-shirts and lots of sun lotion... Of course there is more. Much more. Foreign currency may be exchanged at your hotel, and in most of the large department stores, banks and authorized money changing shops. Exchanging money anywhere else is illegal and the laws are strictly enforced. If you are conning from America, Asia or Europe with a valid passport, and either a return ticket or a ticket to another destination outside the Philippines you may enter without a formal visa and stay for 21 days. If you wish to stay longer you must obtain a Visa Extension either before your trip from a Philippine Consulate or Embassy. Or, once here, you may obtain it from the Bureau of Immigration. Visitors are allowed to bring in duty free personal belongings, two cartons of cigarettes or two tins of pipe tobacco and up to one liter of alcohol. Balikbayans have separate rules and should check with the Embassy or Consulate in their home city. Any antiques you may have acquired during your stay must be accompanied by a certificate from the National Museum. You may also not take more than PhP5, 000.00 (five thousand Philippine pesos) out of the country.
