| Mr. Green, his two sons, Jim and Tom, and
their friends, Joe and Rose, were all out in Mr. Green's boat. Mrs. Green was
sitting on the beach and Kate, their daughter, was swimming in the sea. Mr.
Green made the boat go fast and this made it jump up and down. All the children
held on tightly but Joe slipped and fell down into the bottom of the boat. She
soon got up again, laughing. "Why are you making the boat go so fast?" asked Jim. "Are we trying to catch a big fish?" "I can see something in the water," said Mr. Green. "I think it is a man. Yes, it is. Now he is waving to us." When they reached the man, they pulled him into the boat. At first he was so tired that he could not speak! Then he said, "Thank you for saving my life. My boat hit a rock and sank. My wife and I were trying to swim to the shore. I don't know where she is now. Have you seen her? Mr. Green and the children stood up and looked all around. Then Rose said "There she is! I can see her on that little island. She's waving. She must be all right." |
