Dazu Rock Carvings represent the stone carving art of China in Tang and Song Dynasties. The existing cliff carvings sites of Tang and Song Dynasties come to 74, with more than 50,000 statues. The most famous stone carvings are located in Mount Baoding and Mount Beishan, where stone carvings boast great value that is equal with that of Dunhuang, Yungang and Longmen.

Most of Dazu Rock Carvings are statues of Buddhist characters and statues of other schools such as Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism also account for great proportions. Dazu Rock Carvings is renowned for their grand scale, rich diversity of subject matter, concentrated carvings and fine skills. Those carvings fully demonstrate the feature of Chinese Buddhist stone carvings art in late period that “the unification between deities and human beings”, among which the statues of Guanyin with one thousand eyes and hands, the carvings about the love between mother and children, and the carvings of herdsmen pasturing cattle reflect the high attainments of artists. Besides, the statue of Guanyin seated in the 125th niche in Mount Beishan is acclaimed as the Venus in the Orient. In 1999, Dazu Rock Carvings was listed as world cultural heritage.
