Recent years have witnessed an increasing number of entertainment programs, such as dating shows, reality talent shows, and emotional personal stories, which are aired competitively on China's satellite television channels. While these programs have been attracting a large audience, they have been criticized by many people as “excessive entertainment” and showing “little taste”.
What do you think of this phenomenon? What are the consequences that this tendency of TV programs' over entertainment may bring about? What suggestions would you give to the broadcasting administration about how to make entertainment shows more meaningful and valuable?
China's market economy and the rapid development of commodity economy promote the consumption of popular culture. Consumer culture diversion and its entertainment lead Chinese society into a more entertaining era. However, in China, the TV variety shows have entered into the situation of a melee, fighting, the tragic, variety show identical, content style not high, "three common tendency of the vicious circle from “xiao-he to uncover JianJianJiao” pure and fresh and refined, deep popularity. This phenomenon is nothing but a sharp sword which threatens our whole society and all our citizens.
To begin with, “excessive entertainment” anesthetizes people's souls, poison people's taste, and provides convenience to low-level fun. What's worse, it may distort people's recognition of the outside world. At present, the TV media rely too much on technology, instead of the content of TV programs. This trend has bred the dependence of the audience on TV stations. There are fewer channels for the audience to know the information, and TV media are more likely to gain a higher communication status than other media. Under its powerful influence, the audience just waits for the social life that TV media present for them. Especially for teenagers, their values are easy to be misled. Since teenagers are curious and easily accept new things, but without mature cognitive ability, they regard everything, including drugs, materialism, and so on, broadcasted by TV programs are true, which threatens their life value.
As I mentioned above, it is high time that the broadcasting administration should take measure to make entertainment shows more meaningful and valuable. On the one hand, they need to select those hosts with higher cultural background; on the other hand, they must maintain a strict standard to TV programs. Only in this way, can we really benefit from entertainment programs.
