In Tibet, gatherings are always accompanied by drinking and singing. When there is a wedding ceremony, when a child is born or starts going to school, and when a new house is built, there is bound to be a celebration with alcohol. The interesting part is that on the first anniversary of someone's death, his or her neighbors and relatives also have a get-together. They congratulate the reincarnation for the deceased by singing and drinking. They drink and sing slowly, enjoying themselves in a dreamy and half-drunken state. Tibetans love singing so much that they compose songs for different occasions. There are working songs for workers, love songs for lovers, odes for rites and ceremonies, toasting songs for wine drinkers, preaching songs for respectable monks, and even “robbing songs” for bandits. A Tibetan folklore expert once collected many songs for chivalrous robbers, of which one writes “I, on a horse, am free of worries and anxiety, and headmen on the thrones are inferior than me; I, bird of passage, wandering around the world, and anyplace on the earth is my home.”
