Because AIDS is a worldwide epidemic, nothing less than a worldwide effort can control and perhaps some day kill the disease. The WHO is preparing a worldwide campaign to combat AIDS. At the moment, education is the only effective weapon against the disease. All we know is that its spread can be stopped only if people in the two largest risk groups— male homosexuals and intravenous drug users—can be persuaded to change their life styles: Government must cooperate by fully informing their citizens about the epidemic and, most importantly, by telling people what actions they can take to prevent infection. Public health agencies must also ensure that blood transfusions and injections are safe. Those already infected should receive immediate attention so they do not spread the virus to others.
Now scientists, immunologists and virologists are attempting to find a medical intervention which can help cure those who became sick, whose immune systems have been compromised, and protect those who have not yet become infected.
