单选题 Question 26-30 are based on the following passage:
【正确答案】 A
【答案解析】[听力原文]
Since 1981, when the AIDS virus was first identified, the number of countries reporting cases of AIDS has risen from eight to more than one hundred. The WHO estimates that five to ten million people are now carrying the AIDS virus. Most are unaware that they are infected. The WHO predicts that as many as three million of these carriers will develop the disease by the early 1990s.
AIDS threatens not only lives but also economic development in poor countries. By striking mainly at adults 20-49 years old, AIDS robs these societies of some of their most productive citizens. Ignorance and fear of the disease can disrupt families and communities and may even strain political relations between nations.
Because AIDS is a worldwide epidemic, nothing less than a worldwide effort can control and perhaps some day kill the disease. The WHO is preparing a worldwide campaign to combat AIDS. At the moment, education is the only effective weapon against the disease. All we know is that its spread can be stopped only if people in the two largest risk groups— male homosexuals and intravenous drug users—can be persuaded to change their life styles: Government must cooperate by fully informing their citizens about the epidemic and, most importantly, by telling people what actions they can take to prevent infection. Public health agencies must also ensure that blood transfusions and injections are safe. Those already infected should receive immediate attention so they do not spread the virus to others.
Now scientists, immunologists and virologists are attempting to find a medical intervention which can help cure those who became sick, whose immune systems have been compromised, and protect those who have not yet become infected.
