What on Earth Is Wrong with the Chinese Higher Education System?
It‟s a pity that after three years of excitement, fun and mind-blowing experiences in China, Jimilaoshi, a blogger, recently made a hard decision to leave and not study a doctorate program in China anymore. Among the reasons Jimilaoshi cited were he couldn‟t understand the cramming methods of teaching in Chinese university and “too positive” textbooks. Furthermore, the culture that has been growing among Chinese scholars and students really bugs him.
Recently, an overseas student posts a blog about the problems of Chinese Higher Education System on China Daily,which arouses a hot discussion about Chinese Higher Education System. To be frank, we can‟t deny Jimilaoshi‟s description of his experience, which can be seen everywhere in universities of China. What he said intuitively reflects the current situation of Chinese Higher Education. Here I‟ll illustrate the existing shortcomings systematically.
Firstly, the professional structure and curriculum can‟t meet the needs of the market and society. The greatest characteristic of traditional university education is to consider curriculum development from the traditional “subject-based” mode and from the point of view of a complete discipline system, laying particular emphasis on the integrity, systematism and rigor of theoretical knowledge, lacking of grasp of social needs. Therefore, for the course setting, there are more theoretical teaching and less practical teaching, more compulsory courses and fewer elective courses, and the major setting also sticks to the rules, which lacks innovation, and can‟t adapt to the developing society.
Secondly, many colleges and universities generally overemphasize the theoretical teaching and neglect the practical application. The education mode with knowledge imparting as its main objective is still the main teaching method in universities. While self-study, discussion, investigation and research, experiment and practice are still in the auxiliary position. Due to the one-sided emphasis on systematic teaching of knowledge, university teaching is divorcing from social practice, which is not conducive to the cultivation of college students‟ cooperative ability and sound personality.
Moreover, Chinese Higher Education is lacking in guidance for the cultivation of college students‟ professional quality and employment education. Vocational quality has become a key factor affecting the smooth employment and career development of college students. The professional quality of college students is not only related to the quality of talents for the society, but also to the social reputation of colleges and universities, and also to the employment of college students.
As a Chinese student majoring in English, I have to admit many aspects of China are far from satisfactory because this imperfect community has still kept its characteristics despite what it has developed and absorbed from the rest of the world all the time. So every university must seriously consider how to explore a suitable way for school reform and development under the new situation.
