Should smoking be banned in public places? Answers to this question vary greatly. Some people, especially, smokers protest against that it is a kind of action to deprive of their freedom, while others are in favor of banning smoking in public places. In my opinion, I am inclined to support that smoking should be banned in public places.
First of all, there is no doubt that smoking does harm to the health of both smokers and nonsmokers. For one thing, people will be harmed by the second-hand smoking if someone smokes in public places, especially the infants and children. For another, banning smoking in public places is also beneficial to the smokers. If they are banned to smoke in public places, they will restrain themselves from smoking and smoke less. Therefore, smoking should be banned for the safe of health of both smokers and nonsmokers.
Secondly, there has been a great increase in casualties in fire accidents caused by smoking in recent years. We have also seen the ground littered with cigarette ends. Thus smoking proves to be a source of pollution for the environment and a major threat to life and property. Banning smoking in public places is a contribution to reduce the air pollution and the risks of fire accidents.
Thirdly, smoking in public places infringes people’ s rights. Indeed, each person has the right to choose to do what he or she likes but his or her behavior cannot bother others. Each individual belongs to a society or a community and the most important rule in the community is to behave and to show respect to others. The smokers have the right to smoke but non-smokers also have the right to refuse smoking. As a result, smoking should be banned in public places to show respect to everyone.
In conclusion, I advocate that smoking in public places should be banned so that we can breathe the fresh air and suffer less from the second-hand smoking.
