Say No to Chinese in English Class
Since language-learning has become an irresistible tide nowadays, English, one of the most widely used communication tools in the world, has gained more popularity than the other languages. Thus, the concern about how to teach English has aroused in English teaching domain and out. Inevitably, there comes the debate over whether Chinese should have a role to play in English class. From my perspective of a student, I propose an utterly negative answer to the question.
To start with, language acquisition demands not only the study of language expression but also understanding of the culture and history behind. It is an undeniable fact that no single language can be one hundred percent fully converted into another language. Therefore, the Chinese paraphrases in English teaching frequently suffer ambiguity and loss of original implications. Take “borrow” and “lend” for example, both are translated into “jie” in Chinese, yet their English definitions are remarkably different.“Borrow” means “take or receive from another person, with his or her permission and understanding that it will be returned after a certain time” while “lend” means “to give the possession or use of something on the condition that it will be returned later”. Without English explanation, an English learner will find it difficult to distinguish the two. As we can see, in English class, Chinese actually impedes learners‟ understanding of English.
What‟s more, once a teacher teaches English in Chinese, it is inevitable for him or her to follow Chinese way of thinking. Therefore, it is possible that after being filtered through, the essence of English language lapses when reaching students at the end. For students, they are likely to be conditioned to rely on Chinese since using mother tongue is much easier to convey their opinion. In this case, the situation will deteriorate. Studying English via Chinese translation just strengthens Chinese thinking mode, which partly explains the existence of “Chinglish”. Only by throwing off the walking stick of Chinese can students be trained to express themselves in English and think in English.
From the contention above, considerable disadvantages can be observed in using Chinese in English class. As for us students, the study cannot reach to optimum if we still rely on our mother tongue in the course of learning a foreign language. Therefore, I would like to suggest both teachers and students to use English exclusively for the sake of good command of English.
