The internationally famous scientist Stephen Hawking suffers from motor neurone disease. It means that he is unable to speak, breathe or move without the help of a machine. But his scientific work has won him great awards.
Stephen Hawking was born in England on 8th January 1942. It was at the age of 20 that Hawking first noticed some- thing was wrong with him. He bumped into things and once or twice fell over for no reason. Once he got together with his family at Christmas time, his mother was so worried about his reaction that she urged him to visit his doctor. Hawking then went to the hospital for tests. The result was that Hawking had the illness of motor neurone, an incurable disease that makes the muscles of the body waste away. Doctors said he could not survive the disease before he was 23.
Hawking began to see his life in a different light though he became extremely depressed at first. He married and had three children, and found a job at Cambridge University, and went on his most important scientific research in Physics.
Today, Hawking strongly believes that his story shows nobody should lose hope no matter how bad his or her situation is. As he wrote, "Before my illness had been diagnosed, I had been very bored with life. There had not seemed to be anything worth doing. But shortly after I came out of hospital I suddenly realized that there were a lot of worthwhile things I could do. Life is not fair, you just have to do the best you can in the situation you are in."
