判断题
If overseas students get trouble at college, they can turn to the Welfare Office and the overseas students' societies and organizations.
A
【答案解析】[解析] 1-10 (S=Sally A=Allan) S: In recent years, more and more foreign students have been coming to the UK to study. But when they first arrive many students are unsure of the formalities they have to follow and even where to go for help. So we have Allan McLean from the British Council here today to offer some advice. Allan, first of all, where do overseas students get help when they have problems at college? A: Well, the Welfare Office of the Student Union can provide students with information and advice on all aspects of college life and living in the UK. The college will also have a counselor for overseas students who will specifically look after the interest of foreign students. They can also put you in touch with overseas students' societies and organizations, which are often run by overseas students. So, as you can see, there's quite an extensive support service for the students, and new arrivals shouldn't feel they have to tackle problems alone. S: So what formalities should students coming from abroad complete upon first arriving? A: One important thing is to register with the police. The stamp which will have been put in the student's passport by the immigration officer indicates whether or not they are required to register with the police. If you are from the European Community or the Common Wealth, or if you intend to stay in the United Kingdom for less than six months, you should not have to register with the police. S: SO not all overseas students have to register with the police, but if you are not from an EEC or Common Wealth country, presumably you must register. A: That's right. If you are required to register with the police, you must do so within seven days of arrival in Britain. You must also inform the police every time you change your address while you are in the United Kingdom. S: And what do you have to bring for registration? A: You will need to take your passport of course and two passport-sized photographs of yourself. If you are living in London you should go to 10 Lambs Conduit Street, London WCI. It opens 9 a.m. to 4:45 p. m., Monday to Friday. In other parts of the country you should go to the nearest police station for advice on where to register. There is a charge of twenty-five pounds for registration. S: I see. SO, your passport, two passport-sized photos and twenty-five pounds. A: Uh, uh. Another important thing is that holders of student visas aren't usually entitled to claim state benefit or to work. Attempting to do so may affect your right to stay in the UK. You might be prosecuted and fined about five hundred pounds. It will say on your visa whether you are entitled to get a job in the UK or not. S: So that's something non-resident students should be aware of. Working in Britain without permission is a criminal offence. But if they are entitled to get a job in the UK, how do they go about finding one? A: If you are allowed to work, you will need to get forms OWl and OW5. These can be picked up at any Job Center, where work permits for overseas students can now be issued. The OWl form is filled out by your prospective employer and returned to the Job Center along with your passport and a letter from your college indicating that the employment will not interfere with your studies. If you are looking for work experience or practical learning you must get forms OW21 and OW22 from the Work Experience Section of the Department of Employment. You will be asked for proof of the purpose and intended length of stay here and that you are going to return to your native country. S: Well, I hope that will answer a few questions for overseas students. Thank you very much for coming in, Allan.
在第一个话轮中,女士的最后一句话提出了问题(where do overseas students get help when they have problems at college),而男士则详细进行回答,其中提到了the Welfare Office of the Student Union(学生会救助办公室)以及overseas students' societies and organizations(留学生社团和组织),指出它们都能为留学生提供支持和帮助,这与题句的意思是一致的,因此本题正确。
判断题
The stamp on a student's passport shows whether or not he/she ought to register with the police.
A
The stamp which will have been put in the student's passport...to register with the police(由移民局官员盖在学生护照上的印章会表明该学生是否应当到警方登记),题句意思与此一致,因而是正确的。
判断题
Any changes of the students' address must be informed to the police within a week.
(If you are required to register with the police...while you are in the United Kingdom)指出,需要登记的留学生在到达英国之后七日内应到警方进行登记,而在英国境内期间,每次改变住址也应当通知警方。
It is free of charge to register with police when you arrive in UK.
AII overseas students are required to register with the police as soon as they arrive in Britain.
If you are from the European Community...you should not have to register with the police,即来自欧盟的学生和在英国境内滞留不超过六个月的人是不需要到警方进行登记的,显然与题句中All overseas students are required to register的意思不符。
Working in Britain without acquiring the relevant permission is illegal.
A
Working in Britain without permission is a criminal offence(在英国未经允许打工是违法行为),这与题句的意思完全一致,因此题句正确。
If overseas students are to get a job in the UK, they need to get forms OW1 and OW5 at the Job Centers.
A
If you are allowed to work…can now be issued(如果被允许打工,你需要得到OW1和OW5表格,在任何一个就业中心都可拿到,如今就业中心可以签发留学生工作许可了),题句的意思与此完全一致,因此是正确的。
判断题
Overseas students have to get forms OW21 and OW22 from Job Centers if they are looking for work experience.
B
【答案解析】在第六个话轮,男士的第四句话中提到了OW21和OW22两种表格,指出它们来自the Work Experience Section of the Department of Employment,而非题句中的Job Centers,因此题句不正确。
判断题
Overseas students can only take part-time jobs.
The purpose and duration in London will be inquired for at the department of Employment.
A
You will be asked for…to your native country(你会被要求出示表明你来英国的目的、在英滞留时间以及你会回到原住国的证明),题句只是将其中的个别词汇进行了同义替换,因此是正确的。
