It is rarely see customers walk out of supermarkets or small shops with hands full of grocery items without using plastic bags. Why plastic bags can be seen anywhere? Actually, the popularity of the plastic bag across the world is a choice of businesses, customers and the market for decades. Plastic bags are easy to clean and carry, they are water-proof and most importantly, inexpensive. However, in spite of all these convenience plastic bags can provide, they pose great threats to the environment. They take hundreds of years to degrade and plastic particles from such bags and other plastic goods contaminate seawater, land, and air throughout the world. It is time for us to do something for our home planet and we can do without plastic bags.

On the one hand, we can use other bags to carry our shopping items, such as environmental bag made of paper or cloth. Someone may argue that compared with plastic, bags of paper and cloth could also cause environmental problems. Paper is made from trees and papermaking and textile are both industries producing huge amounts of sewage, which might pollute rivers and seas. As far as I am concerned, compared with plastic bags which are hard to decompose, we can control the pollution from papermaking and textile industry through some restriction policies. Although currently pollution is inevitable, we can control the degree of the pollution. Recycling the environmental bags will do much less harm to our hometown.

On the other hand, we can gradually reduce the use of plastic bags and if there are no alternatives, you can take one and make the plastic bag into profitable. Although it is hard to break bad habits, there is a will, there is a way. And with the development of the science and technology, it is imaginable that the scientists can invent more intelligent replacement for the plastic bags. Until then, we should try every effort to build a clean and safe earth.

It is never too late to protect our hometown and environmental protection is up to all. Let’ s make our own contributions to safeguard the tiny blue planet.
