"Tokyo Nichi-Nichi Shimbun," the Mainiehi Shimbun's predecessor, was founded on Feb. 21, 1872. In 1944, it merged with the "Osaka Mainiehi Shimbun" to become the "Mainichi Shimbun" of today. It is the oldest newspaper in Japan.
