Magic Leap is not short of money. Recently, the under-the-radar but much discussed startup has been raising a US$827 million in round c of funding, led by the famous e-commerce company Alibaba, which invested up to US$200 m illion. This brings Magic Leap’s fimding to around US$1.4 billion. In October 2014, Magic Leap announced the close of US$542 million in round b of funding led by Google.
Virtual reality is displayed either on a computer screen or with special stereoscopic displays， to simulate the user’s physical presence in an im agined world. It shows pixels everywhere, with no transparency to the real world. It is rather limited to games and simulation in a fixed setting. Augm ented reality is an extra dimension over virtual reality since it can also show the real world around the user with graphics overlaying each other.
Magic Leap has recently released the second demonstration of what it is capable of doing, showing an office -setting onto which it projects objects, instead of a flat screen. It claims that its experience is more natural, as it beams the signals of the virtual objects directly into the retina of the eye. This creates the same types of neurological effects as real objects.
Magic Leap’s product aims to beat Microsoft HoloLens. The latter also creates impressive 3D effects in the real world with its head-mounted device, but its visuals are limited to a narrow field of view before your eyes. It feels like you're viewing its ghostly magic images through a little window in front of your face. Whereas Magic Leap creates the feeling of full immersion， which is also called “cinematic reality”.
As CEO, Rony Abovitz is responsible for Magic Leap's daily operations, as well as leading the company's product development and technology strategy. Prior to starting Magic Leap， he was the co-founder and head of development and technology for MAKO Surgical， the world leader in human-interactive robotics for orthopedic surgery.
