My father believed that there were
mysterious forces (神秘的力量) at work in the world. One day, he was lecturing me on
these mysterious forces{{U}} (36) {{/U}}suddenly the door opened, and a

{{/U}}and looked frightened. "Soseph, I have a very{{U}}
(39) {{/U}}problem. These dead geese, they keep shrieking (尖声叫)in such
a sad voice ..."{{U}} (40) {{/U}}hearing this, my father turned
pale."{{U}} (41) {{/U}}dead geese don't shriek," my mother cut
in. "You'll hear for yourself," replied the woman. It is
impossible to{{U}} (42) {{/U}}what I heard. My hands grew{{U}} (43)
{{/U}}and I wanted to run from the room. Father was no
less{{U}} (44) {{/U}}than I was. He jumped away from the
table. "Soseph, what shall I do?" the woman cried."{{U}}

{{/U}}me a fortune!" Father did not know what to answer.{{U}}

"I want to hear it again, "she said. And so for the second and the third time,
the shrieks were{{U}} (49) {{/U}}. Nobody said anything. The woman
asked, "Well, I didn't{{U}} (50) {{/U}}it, did I?"
Suddenly my mother laughed." Did you{{U}} (51) {{/U}}the windpipes
(气管)? "my mother asked. "The windpipes? No..."
"Let me{{U}} (52) {{/U}}," said Mother. She took hold of one of
the geese, and pulled out the wind-pipe. She did the same with the other one. I
was surprised by my mother's{{U}} (53) {{/U}} "Now, try it again." I
was{{U}} (54) {{/U}}to hear the geese shriek, but they were dead
silent. "There is always{{U}} (55) {{/U}}Dead geese
don't shriek," said my mother. "Now go home and cook them for the meal. They
won't make a sound in your pot."
