Should the golden week be canceled?

There is no denying that Golden Week holiday in China has considerably promoted the development of the nation’s tourism industry and enriched people’s life. People around the country spend more time and money traveling and relaxing themselves in the long holiday. Despite the advantages, some argue that golden week holiday should be abolished due to the exceedingly serious traffic jam and the crowdedness of tourist sites. They insist that those problems often spoil the fun the holiday is expected to bring about. In my view, the opinion that the golden week should be abolished can’t be justified.

First and foremost, golden week is a precious period for the majority of people to enjoy the leisure time, including students, babies, workers. They can choose to travel to domestic or foreign tourist resorts for relaxation, wander around in shopping malls, have a gathering with friends or just stay at home to watch some TV shows. Therefore, there is a variety of activities to choose. But on weekends, people don’t have enough time for traveling and often fail to have a gathering with some friends who work overtime in their workplaces.

Secondly, the tourism industry, food industry and sales industry can be greatly boosted in the golden week. As is known to all, golden week is the busiest period for tourism industry. In the period, visitors flood to the main tourist resorts in our country continually. Food industry and sales industry also benefit from the prosperity of tourism industry. That has a positive effect on the overall economic growth of our country because a high level of consumption is stimulated and domestic demands expand.

Last but not least, customers can benefit from the discounts provided by both physical stores and online stores. It has been a common practice for online shops in the main shopping websites to give discounts in festivals or holidays. The annual golden weeks for the May Day and the National Day are no exception. Customers can grasp the chance to get what they want.

In conclusion, I hold the view that golden week should not be cancelled for the above reasons. But it doesn’ t mean that the problems occurring in the golden week can be ignored. I think that the tourism administrations need to place restrictions on the number of tourists in the main tourist resorts. Moreover, tourist sites must strengthen their infrastructure in order to accommodate the estimated number of tourists.
