Education for China"s Migrant Children
It is commonly agreed that great achievements have been made in China"s educational reform, but along with the increase in the number of migrant workers, the percentage of migrant children between five and twelve who don"t attend school in metropolises is also on the rise. The number is shocking, with only 40% attending school in Beijing, and 20% to 30% in Shanghai.
The problem, I think, is rooted in the registered permanent residence system. Those who don"t have the registered residence for the place they stay have to pay an extremely high fee to get their children enrolled in schools. Most of the migrant workers who work with low pay and little welfare cannot afford it.
How can we solve this problem? As far as I am concerned, most importantly, the government must take actions on this matter. People from various parts of the country shall have equal access to educational resources, and this should not be interfered by the registered permanent residence system. Besides, migrant workers should think more for their children, and try to find jobs in their hometowns. They must understand that education is of vital importance to children, without which it will be extremely hard for them to get established in society when they grow up.
In conclusion, from my point of view, the registered permanent residence system is the source of the problem discussed above. To solve the problem, both the government and migrant workers should make efforts, because migrant children deserve the right to get educated.
