A Proposal from a Student
I would like to propose that the university make available to incoming freshmen their future roommate's contact information (e-mail, phone, etc.) Doing this will afford students a couple of considerable benefits. The first of these is that it will serve as a sort of "ice-breaker." Contacting future roommates before the beginning of school will enable students to get along with each other earlier and have at least one friend on campus when they arrive. Another very large benefit is that knowing each other allows for more efficient planning of life together. Dorm rooms are small, so planning together avoids wasting space and reduplicating each other's efforts. Students can avoid bringing the same appliances, for example.
Question: The woman expresses her opinion about the proposal to offer contact information to incoming students living in school dormitories. State her opinion and explain the reasons she gives for holding that opinion.
Now hear a conversation between two students.
【正确答案】The letter proposes that the college begin telling new students their roommate's name and contact information before students begin attending the school.
The woman in the conversation supports the suggestion for two major reasons.
The first one is that if roommates are in contact before they arrive, they have a chance to find out if they can get along, or if they will have problems living with each other.
The second reason is that future roommates can plan what each should bring. If they don't make contact before, the room could have two TWs, two coffee pots, etc. lf they plan, the problem can be avoided. This will lead to the two roommates having enough room to live comfortably.
【答案解析】[听力原文]
M: Hi, girl. Did you hear that the college might start telling new students their roommate's name, phone number, and e-mail address before everyone shows up on campus?
W: I think it is a great idea. You know, it really takes us a lot of time to get to know anyone. This way, if there is going to be any problem, you'll know about it beforehand.
M: Yep, I know what you mean. I used to have trouble with my roommate last semester. I couldn't stand his smoking and drinking all the time.
W: That's why I think the idea is so great. I mean this way, you get to meet your roommate and know about each other before you arrive. If you feel you can't get along with your roommate, you can ask to change roommates and thus save both of you a lot of trouble.
M: My roommate now is OK. I mean we get along great. Only, we each tried to bring everything we owned from home.
W: That's another part I like about this proposal. I mean if we are in touch in advance, we can plan.
M: That's right! Like, you bring the coffee pot, and I'll bring a DVD player. So I don't bring the things the other guy is bringing. You know, there just isn't enough room for everything. lt'd save a lot of trouble, discussing who brings what.
W: That's just what I was going to say. You took the words out of my mouth.
