{{B}}Text{{/B}} There are two aspects which determine an individual's intelligence. The first is the brain he is born{{U}} (26) {{/U}}. Human brains differ considerably, {{U}}(27) {{/U}}being more able than others. {{U}}(28) {{/U}}no matter how good a brain he has to begin with, an individual Will have a low order of intelligence{{U}} (29) {{/U}}he has opportunities to learn. So the second aspect is what{{U}} (30) {{/U}}to the individual — the environment in which he is brought{{U}} (31) {{/U}}. If an individual is handicapped{{U}} (32) {{/U}}, it is likely that his brain will{{U}} (33) {{/U}}to develop and he will{{U}} (34) {{/U}}attain the level of intelligence of which he is{{U}} (35) {{/U}}. The importance of environment in determining an individual's intelligence can be{{U}} (36) {{/U}}by the case history of the identical twins, Tom and Mike. When the twins were three months old, their parents died, and they were placed in{{U}} (37) {{/U}}foster homes. Ton, was reared by parents of low intelligence in an{{U}} (38) {{/U}}community with poor educational{{U}} (39) {{/U}}. Mike, {{U}}(40) {{/U}}was educated in the home of well-to-do parents who had been to college. This environmental{{U}} (41) {{/U}}continued until the twins were{{U}} (42) {{/U}}their late teens, {{U}}(43) {{/U}}they were given test to{{U}} (44) {{/U}}their intelligence. Mike's I. Q. was 125, twenty-five points higher than the{{U}} (45) {{/U}}and fully forty points higher than his identical brother. |
