Discussion is conducive to the solution to certain problems. Affected by this notion, we have been discussing such an issue these days: "Is college ranking necessary or unnecessary in China?" As this is a sensitive as well as a controversial issue, we can not reach consensus on it.
According to a recent questionnaire, 52% of us hold that college ranking in China is necessary. In their opinion, college ranking facilitates all colleges' and universities' knowledge of their own status in China. With college ranking, testees who wish to become college students can select their ideal universities. In addition, the institutions of higher learning that rank in a prominent' position can get more resources. Last but not least, organizations in charge of college ranking can also obtain a lot of resources and benefits.
On the contrary, 48% of us don't think highly of college ranking in China. They argue that college ranking is not scientific enough. It tends to stir controversy because there are too many subjective factors.
As far as I am concerned, I don't support college ranking either because the top 20 to 30 universities have their relatively stable positions. There is no suspense for college ranking in China at all.
